Cheltenham Town 1 - 2 Macclesfield Town

Football League 2. Friday 16th October

Jon Rooney - Macclesfield Town (but not for long......)

I should realise that when Cheltenham have a bright start it's because the opposition are letting them expend a bit of nervous excitement before turning it on themselves. When Macclesfield came alight - which they did a few times in the first half - they were a more fluent and direct footballing unit than the home side. They gave indications that they could cut through the Cheltenham defense on a couple of occasions. Then they did it for certain. The first goal was well worked and the second a blinder from Rooney (Wayne's younger brother) which we were compelled to applaud.

The half time atmosphere was bleak. 'Allen out' was chanted. Then Cheltenham came out and huffed and puffed. A goal by Elvis Hammond and a cameo performance by Alsop never felt like they would do the trick. Although I wish Elvis would get some boots with studs. At present he wears ice-skates.

Macclesfield stuck with it and got the win they were fairly confident of securing. Indeed they ruled the roost at half time and had seen every trick Cheltenham had to offer - so they knew that there was little to fear other than 11 desperate players throwing themselves around.

Beaten by the better side - lets hope this Cheltenham squad are just a bit better than the worst two teams in the league. Otherwise its curtains.

Then again...... sitting in the stands was Alan Wright on his way to Forrest Green with Fleetwood. Only earlier in the week I was discussing one brief moment when he and John Finnigan looked as if they had taken over the team. Now that would be interesting.
